Audra and Trevor thought their bulldog Freya was done giving birth and went to give her a warm bath.
That’s when she popped out one more different from all the rest. Fiona is the perfect name for this pup. Trevor Mosher and his wife Audra Rhys were excited for their three-year-old valley bulldog, Freya. She’s expecting seven puppies. Thankfully, all of them came out healthy, but they didn’t all come out the same. One can only imagine the couple’s surprise when one of the puppies turned out to be a rather interesting color. She doesn’t have an extra pair of eyes or extra legs. But once you see her, you’ll definitely say that she’s one of a kind, or a rare one, to say the least. Fiona came out quite different. The youngest of the seven puppies had a strange hue on her fur. The couple had eased Freya through her birth. One by one, the puppies emerged from their mother at 20 to 25-minute intervals.
When six of them were on the bed crying, Mosher began cleaning Freya so she can finally rest and nurse her young.
Suddenly, in the middle of a hot soap and water bath, Freya went into labor once more. They resettled Freya again to assist her with the last puppy. What emerged from Freya, however, made the couple nervous. The puppy was cased in a black sac. The other six were covered in translucent sacs so the couple started to worry that something was wrong with the last one. Was it an actual puppy? Was it dead? Was it sick? Thankfully, the youngest puppy showed signs of life. It began to squirm and cry. The couple immediately cleaned off the sac and was surprised by what they saw. Fiona’s fur is unmistakably green. “We started to dry her off and noticed she was green and immediately again thought there was something wrong.”
Mosher told Global News, “So we googled it, ‘my puppy is green, what’s wrong,’ and apparently, it is very rare and it has happened a few times all over the world.”
Fiona’s case was indeed strange.
But it’s not unheard of. A couple of years back, a farmer in Italy was baffled when one of their puppies looked like it was dipped into a vat of yellow-green highlighter fluid. Experts say it’s caused by a pigment found in bile. Biliverdin, the same substance that gives our bruises that greenish tint, colors the puppies’ fur when they come into contact with it. It’s nothing to worry about, however, as the color quickly fades over time and is harmless. Much like Mosher and Rhys, people with green puppies can be a bit creative with their names. A puppy born in the UK had the same condition ad was named Hulk after the green brute comic character.
The puppy is healthy.
She’s also a welcome addition to the family. “I’m kind of amazed, really. As rare as it seems to be, I feel very lucky to have witnessed it and be a part of it. I know you hear stories about things like that but to be there and witness it, it was good,” Mosher said to the news outlet. Other people joined in the fun as the couple looked for names to give Fiona.“A lot of people came up with some pretty clever answers. A few of them were Wasabi, Fiona, Hulkette and Pistachio…. kind of like that one, it’s cute,” Mosher said.
