Jeanne Plant wasn’t going to let anything stand in her way of giving this dog a loving home.
Jeanne Plant never intended on bringing another dog into her life. But somehow she found herself at the Kern County Animal Services’ free adoption day. It was there that she fell in love with a 4-year-old Shih Tzu. “Big, brown eyes and she was soaking wet at the time,” Plant told KGET. “I fell in love.” The little white dog, however, wasn’t available for adoption that day. Plant was told that she would need to wait until Tuesday, and even if she did wait she might not end up with the pup since there was a lot of interest in her and adoptions were on a first-come, first-serve basis. But Plant was already in love and there wasn’t much the almost 80-year-old could do about it. Except go after that dog and make sure that she was going to be able to take the dog home. So, she decided to pull an all-nighter and stay at the shelter overnight so she would be the first one there in the morning to adopt her prized pup.
Plant got herself to the shelter Monday night at 11 p.m. and decided she wasn’t going to leave until the shelter opened and she could walk in and adopt her doggo.
“I was determined to be the first at the door,” Plant said. “I have my footstool at the door, so I can sit on it if anybody approaches me.” Plant spent the next nine hours waiting by the door and in the car with her niece. But it was all worth it when the shelter’s doors opened and she got to see her dog’s cute little face again. “It feels like heaven!” Plant said after she was reunited with the little white Shih Tzu she named Lily. After the dog’s adoption was finalized, Plant was ready to take her new buddy home with her… and take a nap. “Boy, am I going to sleep tonight!” said Plant. Before heading to an adoption center, Tractive says it’s important to consider what kind of dog you’re looking for. You can find tips on deciding that here. Once you know what type of dog you’re looking for, you’ll want to visit a shelter and spend time with some dogs to see which ones you connect with. You’ll also want to prepare your home and yourself before you bring a new friend home. You can find tips on that here. It seems like it was more of a love at first sight kind of thing for Plant and her pup.
